Toyota unveiled its all-new Land Cruiser Prado ahead of its 2024 Q2 launch in South Africa.

According to Toyota, the new family of Prado models brings with it significant mechanical upgrades, improved performance, and a styling direction that makes its intent clear. The new design blends traditional and contemporary styling cues, which, we think, will divide opinion.

The forthcoming Toyota Land Cruiser Prado shares its underpinnings with the Land Cruiser 300, introduced in South Africa in 2021.

Pricing for the new Prado will be announced closer to the launch date, but expect it to compete directly – in terms of price – with the likes of the Ford Everest Platinum (R1 168 300, Aug 2023).

What we know

Toyota says that the new Land Cruiser Prado adopts a new suspension setup that allows for greater wheel articulation to improve off-road performance. As such, the TNGA-F ladder-frame chassis is 50% more rigid than the current Prado’s, increasing the new SUV’s overall rigidity by 30%.

Regarding engines, the new Land Cruiser Prado will adopt several of Toyota’s powertrains, comprising petrol and diesel units. It is rumoured that a hybrid model will join the line-up at a later stage, but no word as yet on when we can expect it.

One of the engines to definitely power the new Toyota Land Cruiser Prado is the turbocharged 2.8-litre diesel engine (150kW/500Nm) that propels the invariable Hilux bakkie and the ever-favourite Fortuner SUV.
