The Volvo XC60 has always had a reputation for being the calm, collected one in the premium SUV class.
Unlike some of its European counterparts, it doesn’t shout for attention, simply because it doesn’t have to. This is the type of SUV that gives you a reassuring sense of quality, cleverness, and comfort without ever feeling like it’s trying too hard. And now, with the T8 Recharge plug-in hybrid model, Volvo has given this elegant package a jolt of electrified energy.
Yes, the XC60 isn’t brand new. It’s been around in its current form for a few years, but that’s not a bad thing. The design still looks fantastic, with just the right balance of Scandinavian minimalism and SUV presence. It hasn’t aged poorly – in fact, it wears its maturity well. That said, the Recharge version adds a much-needed twist to the formula, especially in a world that’s rapidly turning electric.

A Mixture of Power Sources
This particular version – the XC60 T8 Recharge AWD Ultimate Dark – is something a bit special. Under the bonnet is a 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine that’s both turbocharged and supercharged, working in tandem with a powerful electric motor. The result? A very healthy 340 kW and a massive 709 Nm of torque. That means this stately SUV can sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.8 seconds. It’s quick, but not in a wild, throw-you-back-into-your-seat way. It just surges forward smoothly and confidently, the way you’d expect from a classy Swede.
And then there’s the electric-only range. Thanks to a larger battery in the newer Recharge models, you can expect around 50 – 80 km of pure electric driving if you keep your foot light. For most urban commuters, that’s plenty. Plus, with a claimed fuel consumption figure of just 1.6 L/100 km, this XC60 is as frugal as it is fast – if you plug in regularly, that is.

Swedish Svelte
Inside, it’s exactly what you want from a Volvo. There’s a calming sense of order and quality. Soft leather, neatly integrated tech, and a Google-powered infotainment system that’s intuitive and genuinely helpful. Saying “Hey Google” to change the temperature or find a charging station feels surprisingly natural, and it all just works without fuss. The Ultimate trim adds nice touches too, like ventilated front seats, a premium sound system, and hands-free tailgate operation. It’s proper luxury without the flash.
Volvo’s well-known commitment to safety hasn’t gone anywhere either. You get a full suite of assistance features, including City Safety, lane keeping aid, road sign recognition, and more. It’s like having a watchful Swedish co-pilot who’s really into crash avoidance.
If there’s one area where the XC60 shows its age a bit, it’s in the ride comfort. It’s generally smooth, but sharper bumps can make their way through, especially if you’ve got the larger wheels. Still, it’s more than livable, and the trade-off is a surprisingly engaging drive for a PHEV SUV.

In Summary
The XC60 T8 Recharge is as real as it gets. It’s not a performance SUV with fake exhaust noises or wild driving modes. It’s not shouting about being “the greenest.” It’s just an honest, beautifully built SUV that happens to be a plug-in hybrid – and a damn good one at that. And with its sustainable powertrain, the XC60 Recharge is still a top pick.
