The Hyundai Creta has always been one of those compact SUVs that just makes sense. It’s got the space, the features, and the reliability that South Africans love, all wrapped up in a well-priced package. Now, with the introduction of the Creta 1.5 Executive IVT (Matte Edition), Hyundai is looking to add a bit more flair to the mix while keeping everything that made the Creta so popular in the first place.
So, does this new edition truly add something fresh to the lineup, or is it just a cosmetic refresh with a fancier paint job?
Matte Madness – A Fresh Take on the Creta’s Design
Matte paint finishes have long been the territory of high-end luxury cars and aggressive performance machines. Seeing Hyundai introduce this styling touch to a mainstream compact SUV is a bold move – and one that will certainly turn heads. The Matte Edition Creta comes in three colour options: Midnight Black Matte, Magnetic Silver Matte, and Optic White Matte, each giving the car a more premium, sophisticated look.
Aside from the paint, there are a few notable exterior tweaks. The 17-inch alloy wheels get a glossy black finish, which works particularly well with the matte paint to create a contrast that’s subtle yet eye-catching. The A and C pillars, door handles, and mirrors are also finished in high gloss black, adding a more upmarket touch. Meanwhile, the front and rear skid plates now come in matte black instead of silver, giving the Creta a slightly sportier aesthetic.
The good news? These changes don’t overdo it. Unlike some “special editions” that pile on unnecessary cosmetic extras, Hyundai has kept things classy and refined here. The Creta Matte Edition still looks very much like a Creta – just one that’s been to a high-end detailer for a fresh new look.

Inside the Cabin – Familiar, But Functional
Step inside the Creta and you’ll find a cabin that sticks to Hyundai’s formula of simplicity, comfort, and functionality. While the interior hasn’t seen dramatic changes, that’s not necessarily a bad thing. The layout remains clean and minimalistic, with a well-thought-out fascia that doesn’t overwhelm with unnecessary buttons or flashy design elements.
There’s good space in both the front and back, making the Creta a comfortable option for families and long drives. Rear passengers even get their own centre armrest with cupholders, which adds to the practicality. The driver’s seat is height-adjustable, and with the addition of telescopic and height adjustment for the steering wheel, it’s easy to find a comfortable driving position.
Hyundai has also upgraded the Premium trim level in the range with artificial leather seats, but since the Executive model already comes with this feature, the real standout for this edition is the inclusion of smart key entry and button start. While not a game-changing addition, it’s one of those small conveniences that makes everyday use just a little smoother.
The 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto is another big plus, ensuring seamless smartphone connectivity. The Executive model gets 4 speakers and 2 tweeters, which should provide a decent enough audio experience for most drivers. Wireless charging is also included, which is a nice touch in an era where cables feel increasingly outdated.

The Drive – Smooth and Sensible
Under the bonnet, nothing has changed, and that’s both a good and bad thing. The 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine producing 84 kW and 144 Nm of torque is adequate for everyday driving, but it’s not going to blow anyone away with performance. It’s a sensible choice – efficient, reliable, and easy to maintain – but those looking for more punch might be left wanting.
The IVT (Intelligent Variable Transmission) is Hyundai’s version of a CVT, and it does a fair job of keeping the drive smooth. It mimics gear shifts, making it feel more natural than a traditional CVT, but at the end of the day, it’s still a transmission that prioritises fuel efficiency over excitement. For city driving, it works well, keeping the revs low and the ride quiet. On the highway, though, it can feel a little sluggish when overtaking.
That said, Hyundai has nailed the ride and handling balance. The Creta is comfortable over bumps, stable in corners, and composed on gravel roads, thanks to its 20 cm ground clearance and well-tuned suspension. It’s not an off-roader, but for a crossover that will mostly be used in urban settings with the occasional dirt road adventure, it gets the job done.

Safety and Features – Peace of Mind on the Road
One of the strongest selling points of the Executive model is its Smart Sense Safety package. This includes Blind Spot Collision Avoidance, Lane Departure Warning, Lane Follow Assist, Forward Collision Avoidance Assist, and Rear Cross Traffic Alert – all features that add an extra layer of confidence behind the wheel.
The airbag count is solid, with front, side, and curtain airbags ensuring good occupant protection. ISOFIX child seat attachments, Electronic Stability Control (ESC), Tyre Pressure Monitoring, and Hill-start Assist Control further reinforce the Creta’s reputation as a safe and family-friendly SUV.
One small downside? These advanced safety features aren’t available on the Premium model, meaning buyers looking for affordability will have to forgo some of these useful driver aids.

In Summary
The Hyundai Creta 1.5 Executive IVT Matte Edition doesn’t try to be something it’s not. It’s not a performance SUV, nor is it trying to be the most luxurious compact crossover on the market. Instead, it takes everything that already made the Creta a great choice and adds a layer of exclusivity with the matte finish and a few convenient extras.
For buyers who love the look of a matte car but don’t want to spend luxury-brand money, this is a fantastic way to stand out. The Executive trim’s generous safety package, comfortable ride, and well-equipped cabin make it a strong contender in its segment.
The only real drawback? The engine and IVT combination remain functional rather than exciting, and at this price point, some buyers might expect a bit more power. But for those who prioritise style, practicality, and peace of mind, the Creta Matte Edition is an SUV that delivers where it counts.
It’s stylish without being excessive, practical without being boring, and most importantly, it remains one of the most well-rounded compact SUVs you can buy in South Africa today.
