2023 BMW 7 Series

BMW launched its new 7 Series in South Africa, and it's more than impressive!

The most technologically advanced vehicle in the BMW portfolio is now available in South Africa.

The 7 Series, a nameplate that’s been leading the Bavarian automaker’s technical innovation, is available in two iteration, with a third joining the fray in 2023’s second half.

The two cars spearheading BMW South Africa’s portfolio are the 740i and the all-electric i7 xDrive60. The entire 7 Series line-up is said to boast heaps of innovation aimed at striking the balance between driving dynamics and travelling at the most comfort possible.

As such, prospective buyers can look forward to two-axle air suspension and the (optional) Integral Active Steering. The 7 Series line-up also offers the largest selection of automated driving and parking systems fitted to a BMW yet.

Pricing for the 7 Series begins at R2 160 000 for the 740i to R2 940 000 for the headlining i7.

The 740i is not fitted with BMW’s xDrive system, meaning that it is available in rear-wheel drive configuration, only.

Despite this, the 3.0-litre six-cylinder engine offers 280kW and 520Nm, allowing the 2 090kg luxury saloon to 100km/h from standstill in 5.4 seconds.

The top speed is limited to 250km/h.

Both the 740i and 740d channel power to the road via an eight-speed automatic transmission, and feature a 48V mild-hybrid system.

Unlike its petrol-powered sibling, the 740d will feature the automaker’s all-wheel drive system, called xDrive.

The i7 is not the first electric vehicle (EV) to hit our shores, but it is probably the most advanced one yet.

In addition to the innovation that will leave many stunned and in awe, the total power output for this car is an impressive 400kW and 745Nm, channeled to the road via all four wheels.

BMW claims a theoretic driving range of between 590km and 625km, making it one of the EVs with the greatest driving ranges currently on sale in SA.

Backseat theatre

One of the most unique features on the new 7 Series range is the Theatre Screen that extends down from the headline, creating a unique entertainment experience for passengers in the rear.

The 31.3-inch screen offers 8K resolution, and is linked to a Bowers & Wilkins surround sound system.

Rear passengers can operate this screen via a remote or the 5.5-inch touch-control functions found in the rear doors. According to BMW, this setup “transforms the rear compartment of the BMW 7 Series into a private cinema lounge on wheels.”

The 7 Series is fitted with a 5G-compatible aerial system.
