Mitsubishi gives Triton bakkie the Athlete treatment

Mitsubishi expands its Triton range in SA with the addition of an Athlete model.

Mitsubishi’s Triton bakkie has been on the receiving end of a cosmetic update, this time receiving the Athlete treatment.

A key product for the Japanese brand’s local portfolio, the Triton Athlete boasts a fresh visual enhancement. It is the second Athlete in the Triton’s history, but also the last update before an all-new model arrives in 2024/25.

The Triton Athlete is based on the Triton 4×4 Automatic, with the Café Racer livery taking it back to British motorcycle lovers who personalised their bikes in the 1960s.

The Triton Athlete is distinguished by red touches to the front bumper lower garnish, side-step and rear bumper step.

The decal kit, inspired by motorsport, includes a hood decal, tailgate strip and side stripes featuring the number 01. Adding to the visual appeal of exterior specification upgrades are LED headlamps with black accents and matching daylight running lamps.

The Triton Athlete rides on unique black 18-inch alloys.

The mechanicals

The Mitsubishi Triton Athlete continues to implement the familiar 2.4-litre turbodiesel engine as the rest of the range, with power unchanged at 133kW and 430Nm. Power is sent to the road via a six-speed automatic transmission, mated to the company’s legendary Super Select II 4WD system.

With the dial of a knob, drivers can toggle between the different drive modes for optimum capabilities in various conditions. These include Gravel, Mud/Snow, and Sand.

The Triton range boasts a ground clearance of 220mm, approach and departure angles of 31 and 29 degrees, and a 25-degree ramp breakover angle.

The Mitsubishi Triton line-up is covered Mitsubishi’s 3-years/100 000km warranty, a 5-year/90 000km service plan and five-year/unlimited mileage roadside assistance. Service intervals are every 10 000km.
