Toyota has taken a significant leap in its pursuit of carbon neutrality with the introduction of the 48V Mild-Hybrid Electric Vehicle (MHEV) technology in select Hilux models.
This innovative technology, which debuted in a successful demo run at the World Rally Championship in Kenya last year, is now available in specific 4×2 and 4×4 double-cab Legend and Raider grades, as well as in the Fortuner.

The new 48V system is a game-changer for the Hilux lineup. It integrates a motor generator, a 48-volt battery, and a DC/DC converter with the trusted (150kW/500Nm) 2.8-litre GD-6 turbo-diesel four-cylinder powertrain and six-speed automatic transmission. This combination significantly enhances both power and fuel efficiency.
The 48V technology provides a power boost of 12kW and a torque increase of 65Nm, ensuring that the vehicle performs exceptionally well, particularly in off-road conditions. One of the most notable advantages of the 48V system is its impact on fuel consumption. The integration of the stop-start system with the turbo-diesel engine reduces fuel consumption by approximately 10% compared to the conventional 2.8-litre engines.

Enhanced Driving Dynamics
According to Toyota, the 48V technology not only improves fuel efficiency but also enhances driving dynamics. The motor generator recovers braking energy during deceleration, providing a natural braking feel and making driving more intuitive. During acceleration, the motor generator assists in areas of lower engine efficiency, resulting in smoother and more responsive acceleration.
For the Hilux 4×4 and Fortuner variants equipped with 48V technology, Toyota has added the Multi-Terrain Select feature. This system enhances wheel traction across various road surfaces, making the Hilux even more capable in off-road situations. Additionally, the motor generator unit is positioned high in the engine bay, ensuring that the vehicle retains its excellent off-road capabilities.
The 48V system allows the engine to switch off for longer periods when stopped in traffic, reducing engine idling speed from 720rpm to 600rpm. This further contributes to fuel savings and reduced emissions. The system also enables a smoother and more efficient stop-start operation, which is a significant improvement over traditional internal combustion engines.
Despite these advancements, the 48V technology is competitively priced, adding only a small premium over the non-electrified models. This ensures that consumers receive exceptional value, with enhanced performance and fuel efficiency for a modest additional cost.

Striking Design Updates
The Hilux Raider grades have also received a visual refresh, featuring a redesigned front bumper, honeycomb mesh grille, and new fog lamp bezels. Other design elements include black side mirrors, door handles, rear bumper, and tailgate handle on the 2.8 models, marking a departure from the previous chrome accents.
The 2.4 model now comes with retractable mirrors, while the 2.8 model boasts leather seats and 8-way power seat adjustment for the driver. The Raider 48V includes additional features such as jam protection, auto up/down windows, push start, smart entry, and Multi-Terrain Select.
Toyota offers a wide range of approved accessories for the refreshed Raider, including roof racks, rooftop tents, bike carriers, fridges, and solar panels. These accessories can be ordered and fitted through Toyota dealers, ensuring a convenient, one-stop-shop experience for customers. Collaborations with respected suppliers like Ironman 4×4, 4×4 Megaworld, and Thule ensure high-quality, competitively-priced options.
