A 70-year lineage culminating in luxury, and open-top driving with new SL 43.

With a history spanning more than 70 years, Mercedes-Benz has launched the latest version of its SL in South Africa.

Kickstarting proceedings is the Mercedes-AMG SL 43, paving the way for the more powerful models to later join the line-up. And making the new SL that much more of a first-choice roadster is its 2+2 seating configuration.

Passengers are treated to a wide range of standard features to make any journey comfortable, including Nappa leather on the seats and steering wheel, AMG sports and Performance seats, and topstitching in yellow or red.

The car is also fitted with the latest version of Mercedes’ MBUX infotainment system that is housed within a fully digital instrument cluster. The high-resolution 12.3-inch LCD screen on the instrument cluster is integrated into a high-tech visor to improve visibility and usability in bright light.

The roof is an electrically operated soft-top that folds in a Z-formation in 15 seconds, and can be operated up to a speed of 60km/h.

AMG’s four-pot

Continuing the trend of its ‘43’ nomenclature, Mercedes-AMG opted to fit the SL 43 with its turbocharged 2.0-litre petrol engine. Whereas this motor produces 310kW in the hot A 45 AMG S, power has been detuned to 280kW, with torque coming in at 480Nm.

However, though the car is 30kW down on its smaller sibling, the powertrain boasts some impressive technologies.

Borrowed from Formula 1, the SL 43 implements an electric exhaust gas turbocharger – a first for a production vehicle. This setup, says Mercedes-AMG, ensures “spontaneous throttle response across the entire rev range,”, increasing the driving experience whilst playing ball with efficiency.

In certain driving conditions, a short-term boost of 10kW/150Nm is also on offer.

The SL 43 sends its power to the rear wheels via a nine-speed MCT (multi-clutch transmission), allowing for a 0-100km/h time of 4.9 seconds and a top speed of 275km/h.

The Mercedes-AMG SL 43 is priced from R2 449 500 and is covered by a 5-year/100 000km maintenance plan and a 2-year/unlimited km warranty.
