Mercedes-AMG has been very coy about its upcoming GT, but confirmed that it will debut the new car at the upcoming Monterey Car Week.
The unveiling is expected to take place between 17 and 20 August.
The new AMG GT is expected to share its architecture with the recently launched AMG SL, but power is expected to exceed that of its ‘lesser’ sibling. The turbocharged 4.0-litre V8 engine is expected to produce more than 430kW and 800Nm.
Along with a nine-speed automatic transmission, the powertrain will be augmented by hybrid technology. This further fuels speculation that Mercedes plans a big comeback for this lauded engine (that’s been replaced by a 2.0-litre engine in other AMG models), despite the bigwigs vehemently denying it.
Other AMG models set to feature at Monterey Pebble Beach include a special-edition SL roadster, the S63 E Performance super-limousine, the Mercedes-Maybach EQS 680 electric SUV, and the Mercedes-Benz Vision One-Eleven concept car.
The first-generation AMG GT launched in 2014, replacing the instant-classic SLS. All models were powered by the famed 4.0-litre V8 petrol engine, with the line-up comprising of the GT, GT S, GT C Roadster, GT R, and GT R Pro. There were also several four-door versions.
As a send-off, Mercedes-AMG launched the AMG GT Black Series – a hardcore version of a car that reintroduced Mercedes-AMG into the top echelon of sports cars.
