Aldan Gentles and Jakes Nakoo

These cousins are all about sharing their passions for cars.

Like many, Aldan Gentles and his cousin Jakes Nakoo spent countless hours behind their Play Station playing Need for Speed and Gran Turismo. And like many of us, they quickly developed a passion for all things four wheels and the bug never stopped biting.

“We grew up playing with remote control cars and racing each other on Need for Speed, but now we are playing with our own babies,” says Aldan as he looks proudly over at the limited edition (2011) Ford Fiesta 1.6 Titanium he’s had for almost three years now.

Jakes, who had his (2017) Volkswagen Polo 1.2 TSi Trendline for little over a year, says he and Aldan traveled to Colesberg to collect it, with Aldan affirming that it was on his cousin’s graduation day.

The little things

Jakes is not too caught up over Aldan having his car longer than him, but it seems that it’s an ongoing gag between them to outdo each other when talking about their cars. But one thing they take very seriously is the workmanship that goes into the cars, because neither the Polo nor the Fiesta is stock standard.

The previous owner of Jakes’ Polo fitted the car with a front lip, a Batman spoiler, and Golf 7.5 rims. Though some of these were retained, he replaced the rims with Polo Highline units, removed the rear spoiler, and fitted the car with an N4 lowering kit and FK coil overs.

“The comfort I get driving my Polo with these coil overs is quite satisfying, so I’m happy,” Jakes says before adding with a guilty smile: “Only the steering wheel is actually still Trendline!”

Opposed to Jakes’ less-is-more approach, Aldan went a bit more aggressive with his Fiesta’s styling. In addition to the ARC coil overs, he had the car’s rim sprayed in a charcoal glitter colour, a sequential LED strip added to the headlights for better ambiance, wrapped the roof to create a panoramic look, and at the rear is a spoiler that runs with the roof.

It is also fitted with a powerflow exhaust.

“The cars my cousin and I have are not for speed. It’s purely for the enjoyment and the look,” Jake notes, with Aldan adding that the acknowledgment from the car community also goes a long way.

“It’s nice when you’re driving and you get the acknowledgment from someone, letting you know that you’ve done something right,” Aldan says. “Your car compliments who you are. And when you look at Jakes’ car, for example, it’s always clean and spotless – that’s who he is.

“By that I’m not saying me or my car is always dirty, just for the record!”

Aldan and Jakes have several plans in the pipeline for their respective cars, but their aim will always be to show that “stance is not a crime, and that you can enjoy your car responsibly.”
